This website contains the latest status reports on the mobility projects currently being undertaken by Fort Bend County or it's city partners. Project status for each project is updated as new information is received or any significant milestone has been achieved.
Fort Bend County has seen tremendous growth in the last 3 decades growing from a population of around 52,314 in 1970 to 354,452 in 2000 to an estimated 493,187 in 2006. This is a 943% increase in population in only 36 years. This boom in the county's population says a lot about what a great place Fort Bend County is to live and work but creates an enormous challenge for those who must plan, finance, and construct the necessary infrastructure required to serve all of these new residents.
In 2000 the voters of Fort Bend County voted overwhelmingly in favor of selling $146 million in bonds to enhance mobility on a series of projects throughout the county. This was a great start but the population shift to Ft. Bend continued and soon it was obvious that even more projects needed to be expedited. So again in 2007 voters again voted overwhelmingly in favor of additional bonds to continue the momentum of the initial mobility bond program. The current 2007 Mobility Bond Program multiplies its impact by partnering with various cities within the County. The cities have committed an additional $110 million in funds.
The current Mobility Program includes 47 projects totaling more than $256 million and has a planned life span of approximately 5 years to design, bid, and construct all of the projects. Voters were promised that this program would have a two cent or smaller impact on property taxes, in keeping with that promise the various projects in this program have been scheduled to provide the greatest impact to the traveling public with the smallest tax impact over the life of the program.
